The BRE Trust, in collaboration with the Worshipful Company of Constructors, would like to invite applicants for the Royal Charter International Research Award.

We are seeking exceptional individuals from across the built environment sector to undertake an
innovative, topical study relating to the theme – digital built environment. Potential topics include,
but are not limited to: connected homes and communities, BIM, the internet of things, smart
infrastructure, smart cities, big data and the human and societal issues of a digital built environment.
It is expected that there will be an international dimension to the study.

The winning applicant will receive £7,000 towards the cost of their study and the digital publication
of their work by the BRE Trust. A summary of the final report will also be published in Constructors
Journal, the journal of the Worshipful Company of Constructors.

The Criteria

  • The award is open to all applicants in employment in the built environment, or undertaking postgraduate research within the field of the built environment.
  • Applicants will be expected to have the full support of their employer or academic institution for the study.
  • Although the study will inevitably require some activity overseas, applicants will need to be based in the UK during the period of the research.
  • The research must be completed within a period of 12 months.
  • Applicants must demonstrate that they have the required knowledge and expertise to undertake the research.

Format of Application

  • Applicants are invited to contact BRE in order to obtain an application form.
  • Applicants can submit a maximum 1000 words to explain their proposed study and demonstrate how the outputs will be used by industry to generate significant impact.
  • The deadline for applications is Friday 28th October 2016. The shortlisted applicants will be interviewed in London on Thursday 8th December 2016 and the award will be presented at the Worshipful Company of Constructors Awards Dinner in February 2017.
  • For further information and an application form please contact Matthew Barker at BRE, Matthew.Barker@bre.co.uk
