The shortlists for the BREEAM Awards 2016 announced this week represent some of the finest examples of sustainable buildings around the world. Many of them are BREEAM Outstanding rated and each of them is excelling in every category under BREEAM, from Ecology to Energy.

Whilst the winners are important the shortlists, and the quality of the buildings in the shortlists, are reason for celebration.

This year we have higher average scores in every category of the awards – a testament to the commitment and skill of the clients, design teams, contractors, BREEAM assessors and others involved. We also have fierce international competition, reflecting the expansion of BREEAM which is now used in more than 70 countries, with strong representation from France and the Netherlands, as well as the UK, together with Russia, Belgium, Spain and more.

Every certification under BREEAM is considered for entry and the top 5 scoring buildings within each category of BREEAM (offices, retail, education etc.) submits a case study to our panel of independent, industry judges who make the final decision. The judges take in to account the BREEAM assessment and score, and also any particular challenges the project overcame. They also look at the value of the building to users and the wider community. The ‘learning value’ and replicability of a successful project is also taken into account.

We also present awards to assessors and assessor companies – based on the highest scores achieved by assessors throughout the year – and a series of ‘Country First’ awards, recognising the first BREEAM certification in a new country.

The awards ceremony takes place on March 8th in London, on the first evening of Ecobuild. This is a great opportunity to join the shortlisted project teams and a great way of unwinding after Ecobuild, click here to book a ticket and join us in recognising some outstanding buildings and project teams!
